Is it legal to ride a motorcycle without a helmet?

In the UK you must wear a safety helmet when riding a motorcycle or a quad bike on the road. In addition, all helmets worn on UK roads must meet one of the following: British Standard BS 6658:1958 and carry the BSI Kitemark.
