How much load can I put onto my ATV tyres?

Whatever you use your ATV or quad bike for, you may be curious to know how the size of your ATV tyres, the inflation pressure, and the speed you travel at can affect the load-carrying ability of your ATV.

For example, you could purchase an ATV advertised for its outstanding ability to carry heavy loads, but if your tyres are at risk when subjected to that load, then you might need to change your driving style or inflation pressure.

As an indication, we have pulled together some data based on the most popular ATV tyre sizes here. More detail is included below.

Note: The weights above refer to maximum weight per tyre. This is always subject to the capabilities of your vehicle.

First things first: The wider your ATV tyre, the higher its potential load capacity. Thanks to the larger footprint of your tyre, the weight can be spread more evenly across the ground, which brings us to our next point.

The higher your inflation pressure (to an extent), the higher your load capacity. The extra air in the tyre acts as an additional cushion, using air pressure to support a heavy load. Be cautious of over-inflating your ATV tyres, however, as it may make them less comfortable, more prone to bursts and punctures, and cause uneven tyre wear. Consult the tables above along with your vehicle handbook, or call us for advice on 01394 604040.

In addition, the slower you travel, the more load you can carry. This is all about managing your tyres; at higher speeds, your tyres will generate more heat, which is also a side-effect of carrying heavy loads. With the extra heat generated by both speed and load, you can significantly shorten the life of your tyres or risk punctures, cracks and sudden or slow degradation. If you are carrying heavier loads, travelling at lower speeds will help to preserve your tyres.

Always remember: For tyres operating at inflation pressures below 14psi (100kPA), AT rim contours are required.
